Problem
Procrastination is not about being lazy. We put off tasks that may be too difficult or make us bored because it puts us in a negative mood. By avoiding the task, we can avoid those negative feelings and bring in short-term happiness.
The physical environment can affect a person’s mood. Research known as the Coffee Shop Effect showed that creativity is enhanced by low to moderate levels of ambient noises. Environments such as cafes or cafeterias can boost your creative output and abstract thinking abilities. Background noises stimulate signals to the brain and enhance your mood. This can help with decision-making. Having to be surrounded by people with the same goals also acts as a motivator. By observing other people working, it can motivate you to work as well.
Goal
To provide a motivating environment that promotes creativity and productivity,
Solution
Cowork Space x Coffee
Double Double will provide the target audience with a solution that can get them out of the cycle and help them reset. Providing a productive space will help the targeted audience make the first step to changing their habits. Being surrounded by like-minded people can act as a motivator that will inspire them to work. It will help them relieve the negative feelings they get when they procrastinate. This space can also target their sensory experiences by providing them with a different visual environment and auditory stimulation than their homes.
As this project is created with COVID in mind, a virtual zone is also created for the users to access the safe at the comfort of their own homes.
Different zones include:
-
collab zone
-
private zone
-
Quiet zone
-
virtual zone

Research
Visual Essay
I completed the visual essay by asking people around me how they defined procrastination through images. A lot of the images I received are very quirky and chaotic, I decided to create an interactive page with elements that are jumbled and disorganized. This also portrays the feelings that occur when I procrastinate. A lot is on my mind and I'm stressed by the tasks that I have to complete. This incorporates my interpretation and others interpretations of what procrastination means. I began with some sketches and then wireframed the website together. I included animated pop-ups on the page to help portray my vision.
Academic Research
Secondary research was conducted in the form of analyzing scholarly articles. In my research report, I looked into how procrastination plays on productivity and how design can be used to help people become more productive.
Competitive Research
I began conducting market research to develop an insight into the current products being offered and the areas of opportunity we could fill. I looked into digital and physical workspaces and how the process of renting out a space works. I also looked into online studying websites and their design solutions.
Developing Personas and PACT
To summarize my findings, I created a PACT analysis and three user personas of target audiences to help assess how my space and website can help with their needs. This helped synthesize my findings and create my user scenarios
Target Audience
The target audience will be people from age 18-29

Phase 3: Branding
Visual System
I summarized the vision for our brand identity with 4 key terms:
-
professional
-
calming
-
Engaging
-
Clean
With these qualities in mind, I decided to name my brand Double Double. The space doubles as both a coffee shop for consumers to connect and as a space for consumers to study and complete their work. It is a double space where it is offered both as a physical and virtual space.
I then proceeded to establish a style guide, which helped us keep consistency throughout all of my high-fidelity prototypes.
With the research behind the psychology of colour, I decided to use colours that best represent the moods of the consumers when they enter the room. The primary colours are orange and blue to provide the value of security and playfulness.
Physical Space Development
After developing the branding, I began creating the physical space. With the targetted audience in mind, I decided to create different zones for people to work in. The collaborative zone is a space that allows everyone to work together and the area and essentially the coffee shop area. The Private zones allow the consumers to rent out the entire room for themselves. This zone also includes conference rooms. The Quiet Zone allows consumers to rent out a hot desk and areas where consumers can work quietly on their own. Throughout the space, I included the branding as part of the decoration of the space. The eye decorations on the walls are to act as something that is "watching you" when you are completing your task.

Marketing Materials
I created some posters and mockups of how the branding will go with the coffee cups.

Web Development
System Map
After the in-depth research, and creating the physical space, I began developing the website, while keeping my targeted audience in mind. I started by listing all the features I wanted to include on the website and prioritize the list by using the MoSCoW method. Through this process, I was able to consolidate all my ideas into a system requirements chart to help us create the system map.

Web Iterations
I began the process by creating low-fidelity wireframes for our app layout. After multiple rounds of iterations, as well as receiving feedback from our professors, I finalized my product and started prototyping. I also create a type system to ensure the website remains cohesive.

Conclusion
In the end, I am very happy with my final project and my overall concept. I am grateful for the opportunity to explore a topic in-depth on a year-long project. This topic relates closely to me as I also struggle with procrastination. As covid plays a major part in our lives, I was able to adapt and be flexible with my final deliverables which made me consider different aspects and core features to include.
For the Future
-
Complete user-testing and user interviews with the identified target audience. This process would help me identify my core features and reiterate any details I missed.
-
Expand the virtual zone with more productivity tools to help target different studying styles.
-
Create merchandise such as stickers for people that visit the store.
